Jan 3, 2018MEETING MINUTESMaitland, FL President Sarah called the meeting to order at 10:06 am. More than 50 members and guests were present on a very cold, rainy morning. Sarah honored Jane A, our member-at-large, by presenting her with a birthday crown. All members with January birthdays were serenaded with a rendition of "Happy Birthday".
LEGAL AID SOCIETY INITIATIVE
Donna Haynes, a representative of the Orange County Legal Aid Society, visited the meeting to thank us for our donation of quilts to be given to young adults aging out of the foster care system. She emphasized how much this gift means to these young people, as often they have very, very few resources as they start their independent lives. Thus far, OMQG members have contributed a total of 78 quilts to this worthy project.
UPCOMING SEW DAYS
Sarah reminded members that the Dr Phillips Sew Day will take place
this Saturday, January 6. Maitland Sew Day will take place Monday, January 8.
SARAH SHARP CLASS
The class will take place Saturday, January 20, at the Bernina Sewing Center in Lake Mary. The class is currently full, and a waitlist has been started. There are two people on the original class list who have not yet paid. Please remember that it is your payment that holds your spot, so if you still plan to attend this class, you must contact Marge immediately about your payment. Otherwise, your spot will be given to those on the waitlist.
CREACTIVE CLUB
This month, members showed their finished projects--#5 on our CC lists.
Sharon was the winner of the prize drawing for those who completed their #5 projects.
Our next CC project will be #3 on our list--bring your completed projects to our March meeting. A number of members commented on how much they have enjoyed finishing UFO's this way--working on a specific project each time has helped them keep on track in finishing UFO's. Thank you, Caroline, for starting this club!
BLOCK OF THE MONTH
Pam was the winner of this month's blocks, which had an appropriately wintery color scheme!

NOMINATING COMMITTEE
Karol updated the group on the process of nominations for next year's Board. (Nominations are now closed, as the January meeting was the deadline for new nominations.) As of the meeting, however, no one had come forward to put their name in as a potential Community Outreach coordinator. Please call Karol E or Beth S if you would like more information, or are interested in this position.

Yannick would also love to have someone take over as librarian, as she has now done this job for two years. This is a fun job--you get to spend the guild's money on quilting books you'd like to read! Please call Karol, Beth, or Sarah if you are interested.
MODERN PRINCIPLES PART 4
Debra J presented the first of a two-part lecture on how she decides how to quilt her quilts. Some of her tips and techniques:
Start thinking about how you're going to quilt the quilt as soon as you start working on it--let it give you inspiration.
Be adventurous, not apprehensive!
She has two major sources of inspiration: online sources (Instagram, Google, other guild blogs, MQG website, which is packed full of videos and tutorials, Pinterest, quilter's blogs, such as Carly Porter, Laurie Kennedy, etc.; and real world sources (our guild library, using graph notebooks for quilting doodles, photos, the quilt itself.)
Some tools Debra uses to narrow down her design choices: plain paper, graph paper, photocopies, colored pencils; clear or ruled templates with a dry erase marker; apps such as Sketchbook and Drawcast. These apps allow you to import a picture of your quilt, and then draw on it.
You HAVE to practice!
Be a modern quilter and never stitch in the ditch again!
Debra's lecture will continue next month. She asks that members bring in quilts that they have yet to quilt, and we will talk about some ideas for each. She also asks that members bring their own notebooks for drawing and experimentation.
